As Vaillancourt Doors and Windows marks its 70th anniversary, here is a brief interview conducted with one of its two senior partners, Carl Vaillancourt, to understand how the company has successfully adapted over the years to the needs and desires of clients and, in so doing, ranked as one of Les Affaires magazine’s top 300 SMEs in Quebec in 2017.
What was the most important value that your father passed on to you?
Without a doubt, discipline. We are extremely demanding about the quality of the products we sell. After all, our name is our brand. If a client has a bad experience with our products or services, it affects us personally.
Where do you find your inspiration when it comes to product development?
We’re always striving to stay ahead of the pack, because to be a leader, you need to be bringing things to the market before everyone else. One thing we did in this regard is add a state-of-the-art paint room at our plant. We had a feeling that demand for colours was going to grow. Having our own paint room also means that we are able to control quality on-site and stay true to our values of stringency and attention to detail. Today, three out of four doors we sell are painted. We certainly don’t regret having embraced that trend!
Have you considered further diversifying your offerings?
In my opinion, if you want to be the best at something, you need to specialize in it. When it comes to our various product models, our clients have countless options to choose from. For example, our casement windows come in a range of thicknesses and sizes and with every possible option. This kind of variety is rare and is what sets us apart from our competitors. This year, we’re planning to expand certain product lines even more. To us, it’s important to be equipped to meet our clients’ every need.
Transparency is another one of your key values. You never hesitate to throw open the doors to your plant and show your clients what goes on behind the scenes.
Yes, the concept of transparency is incorporated into our slogan and guides our day-to-day activities. We’re happy to welcome clients who want to learn more about our on-site procedures and techniques, and we ensure that they leave well-informed.
Any development projects currently ongoing?
Yes, we’re planning to launch a new retail presence in Ontario. We’re very excited about making the move into that province. For the time being, we’re just going to focus on marketing our products there. It’s important to convey the message that our products in Quebec are more solid, more substantial and therefore of higher quality. And so we’re positioning ourselves at the high end of the market.
